How to upload files using the File Manager

Virtualmin includes a built-in File Manager that lets you upload, edit, and organize your website files without needing a separate FTP client.

Steps to upload a file

  1. Log in to Virtualmin with your Extra Administrator account.
  2. In the side menu, open Others → File Manager (the icon and location may vary depending on the theme).
  3. Navigate to the public_html folder, which is your website's public root.
  4. Click the Upload button (usually shown as an upload icon in the top toolbar).
  5. Select one or more files from your computer, or drag and drop them into the window.
  6. Wait for the progress bar to finish; the files will appear in the folder listing.

Other useful actions

  • Create folders: use the "New Directory" button inside the File Manager.
  • Edit text files: click a file and choose "Edit" to modify it directly from your browser.
  • Upload compressed files: upload a .zip file and use the "Extract" option to unpack it directly on the server.
  • Permissions: right-click a file and choose "Change Permissions" if an application asks for specific permissions (e.g. 644 for files and 755 for folders).

Alternative: if you prefer a traditional FTP/SFTP client (FileZilla, Cyberduck, etc.), you can create an FTP user under Edit Users or use your Extra Administrator credentials directly, depending on your plan's configuration.
